As I walked in the cold with no gloves and my fingertips numb as my camera bodies swung across my body, as the wind hit my eyes it hurt. When I turned the corner, I saw her sitting still as a statue and lifeless. She sat with her eyes showing as we talked, she told me that her body hurts, and explained that my pain runs deep. She is a mother, she is a friend, she is a grandmother as she tells me caused her family extreme amounts of pain for the things that she has done. She says my goal has always been to be kind and show how big her heart is. Her name is Helen, she worked as an aircraft mechanic during her time in service where she described that when she got out of the Navy made some bad choices that landed her on the New Jersey streets. I asked Helen did she have a place to go to get out of the cold and she said, “When you have so much internal pain you don’t really feel it!”
