Walking down the street I recognized a man large in statue that to me said prior service. The kind of solider that was from the generation of spit shinning boots, pressed uniforms, and creases that can could cut. As his direction of travel came closer to me, I could see that he had on a black watch cap with the Army logo presented to the front. I asked him was he active or a veteran and he told me that he was an Army veteran with service from 80-92 with 25 Infantry Division deployments to the DMZ at Camp Casey in Korea. He was a second gunner and artillery man. I asked him his name and he took off his glove to shake my hand and almost squeezed the life out of my hand, but it was a firm handshake and told me his name was Nate. A native of Detroit calling it home before and after his service. In our conversation not expecting it because he didn’t present it but told me he was homeless. He uses a friend’s iron to press his clothes because he said I was raised to be presentable what I show is how I will be treated. He told me that he goes to the local Crystals in the area and tries to clean the outside of the restaurants in an effort to earn a few dollars. He told me that what he earns hes saving to one day get his own place however in the meantime he lives where ever he can to keep himself clean and safe.
