Afghanistan Army veteran Rick of Detroit had his world changed when he lost his legs in combat to an enemy grenade. 40 years old now he said that he was on his last patrol with his squad on a reconnaissance mission north of Kabul when his squad encountered an ambush pushing them into an area which put him in a position to getting his legs blow off below the knee by a grenade. Rick said that he is a CIB and CAB holder and he knew better, so he blamed himself. He remembered being shot multiple times and his men pulling him out and getting him medevac’d. He said he knew for certain that he was going to die based on what he remembered at the time. He told me that after getting out life as he knew it wouldn’t be the same because the lady friend, he had at the time left him because he went into severe depression and said that he didn’t want to seek help. Rick said this left him in a vulnerable state with all that he was already dealing with. He said the Army was his only option out of high school and now he has nothing. He said he wanted to stay in until they forced him out. The way he described his feelings were a failure to his men and the Army for getting hurt. Rick said you add no legs to being homeless all you have the will to do is drink away your pain. He told me that he wanted me to keep doing my work and wished me well.
