The Twin cities didn’t disappoint as I walked about downtown I enjoyed the weather on a Thursday afternoon before the forecast that weekend called for snow. As I made my way to Chipotle I saw Mario sitting in a small nook and asked me if I could spare him some change to put in his Chipotle cup. I asked if we could sit down at a table and chat and he shared with me his time in Vietnam and shared how the challenges of war, the state of the US and politics and race all played on his mental health. He told me he wasn’t always homeless but on his current state this was a difficult time. He went on to explain that his daughter allowed him sometimes to stay with her but because of her situation he didn’t alway like being a burden to her. He said when he can he stays with her but most of the time he sleeps on the streets. Bundled up he says what Uncle Sam taught me about war and combat I utilize while out here.
