After a mid morning drag of his bent cigarette, Sunny explained that at 68 he has embraced his homelessness after his time in the service in the US Air-force. He told me that he has seen so much living on the streets from the poorest of the poor, to those with nothing. He said many of us go unnoticed and never talked to.
As a traveling photographer in an attempt to continue to cover these stores and document I see so much disparity. Sunny went on talking and between each breath he allowed smoke to exhale from his crusty sun burned lips and spoke with a low smokers voice. He said just because you served in the US Military doesn’t mean a hill-a-beans to anyone. I could feel his anger as he vented about how he wishes things could be better.
He said he recently witnessed his close buddy age 62 kill hisself. Not from not being able to survive but rather as Sunny explained didn’t have a strong mind and wanted to end his pain. He said that he talked about it quite a few times just never thought he would do it.
As an articulate wise man he went on to explain that when you reach this level of homelessness in life people assume that you are one step away from the salt of the earth and no longer require help. He said which is just the opposite that we need help and belonging its human nature.
